DOE-Idaho Operations Summary

DOE-ID Bi-Weekly Summary
For the Period Dec. 11, 2012 to Jan. 2, 2013

EDITOR'S NOTE: The following is a regular summary of operations at DOE's Idaho Site. It has been compiled in response to a request from stakeholders for more information on health, safety and environmental incidents at DOE facilities in Idaho. It also includes a brief summary of accomplishments at the laboratory. The report is broken down by contractor: Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project (AMWTP), Idaho Cleanup Project (ICP) and Idaho National Laboratory (INL). This summary will be sent to everyone on INL's regular news release distribution list every other week. To be added to this distribution list, please call Brad Bugger at (208) 526-0833.

Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project

Dec. 10: It was discovered that an over-pack waste drum stored at the Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Facility had the same barcode number as a waste drum that had been previously shipped to a mixed low-level waste repository. An investigation was initiated and a review undertaken to determine potential duplicate barcode labels on waste containers remaining on site. (EM-ID—ITG-AMWTF-2012-04).

Operational Summary

Waste Shipments:   Eight shipments of contact-handled transuranic waste and two shipments of remote-handled transuranic waste were made to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico for disposal the week ending December 8, 2012.  Eight shipments of contact-handled transuranic waste were scheduled for the week ending December 15, 2012.

Idaho Cleanup Project

Dec. 17: An investigation was initiated into the adequacy of controls for relief valves and a rupture disk at the Integrated Waste Treatment Unit (IWTU). If the valves are not properly controlled, pressure could increase downstream of the rupture disks during process heat-up. This increase could cause a condition where the rupture disks would not rupture at the required pressure to protect the process off-gas system. IWTU operations have been shut down and will not resume until the necessary changes have been made to the facility or procedures. (EM-ID—CWI-IWTU-2012-0013).

Operational Summary

Waste Repackaging: The Idaho Cleanup Project contractor, CWI, has completed its second full week of work repackaging transuranic waste sludges from the Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project  in its Accelerated Retrieval Project- Five (ARP-V) facility. CWI opened and repackaged 28 drums the first week and 13 drums the second week.

Idaho National Laboratory

Nothing to report.

Operational Summary

Energy Development Report Delivered to Wyoming Governor: An Idaho National Laboratory delegation, led by Lab Director John Grossenbacher, recently presented to Wyoming Governor Mead a summary of the INL report, “Overview of Energy Development Opportunities for Wyoming.” This report was developed in collaboration with the Wyoming Business Council, the State of Wyoming, the University of Wyoming and the NGNP Industry Alliance, under the authorization of the Wyoming legislature and governor.  A mutual decision was made to move forward to establish a regional energy council, which would be led by the Wyoming governor’s office, with INL assistance.
